More night bus services for the region.

Story added: Tuesday 31 July 2007
From very early on Saturday, August 4, anyone enjoying a night out at the weekend in Newcastle, Gateshead or Durham will have some new, night-time bus services to take them home.

Two brand new services - the N97 Newcastle and Gateshead service and the N20 Durham circular - will run every Saturday and Sunday nights.

The N97 will take a circular route from Bewick Street and Market Street in Newcastle city centre, stopping in Dunston, Whickham, Lobley Hill, Bensham and Gateshead Interchange before returning to Newcastle.

The service starts at six minutes past midnight and runs hourly until just after 3am every Saturday and Sunday.

The second new service, the N20, has a circular route between Durham, Gilesgate Moor, Belmont and Carville.  The first bus leaves Durham North Road at five past midnight and runs hourly until 4.05am on Saturdays and Sundays.

From this Saturday, the N21 service from Newcastle city centre will also be extended into Durham City on Saturdays and Sundays.

The N21 service used to end at Chester-le-Street, but passengers have asked for it to be extended and from this weekend it will continue on to Plawsworth, Framwellgate Moor and Durham City.

The N21 was the first night service to be introduced earlier this year and also runs an early service on Mondays to Fridays.

Martin Harris, Commercial Director with Go North East said

“We have worked closely with the police and the Safer Newcastle Partnership to make sure our passengers feel comfortable and confident on our night buses, including fitting all of our night buses with cctv cameras.  We are delighted they are so popular and pleased we can contribute to the ‘don’t drink and drive’ message in such a practical way.”

Go North East also has a fourth night bus, the N56 which runs between New Bridge Street in Newcastle and Sunderland Interchange.
